Isometric Renders Michiel van den Berg
“Last month I started a ‘30 isometric renders in 30 days’ challenge. To get ideas out of my (mental) sketchbook onto my screen I created one isometric picture/render a day. I love the style, it’s good render/lighting practice and good to ‘keep the motor running’ so to speak.”

It’s a funny thing when you have been drawing/painting in a style that isn’t entirely your own for a while. A few days ago was the first time in months that I had chance to just sketch with out an ulterior motive and it felt very odd, almost like drawing with my left hand.
It’s taking a while but I am finally starting to feel more like myself when I doodle so I figured I would post a few of the sketch pages I’m not totally horrified to show others. Some times you have to just hack through a rut I guess, and the best way to move past something is to just put it out there.

Visual Communications 4 project:
Character designs and Key frames presenting a redesign for Super Mario Bros. in which Princess Peach, aided by a mysterious Toadstool Merchant, sets off on an adventure to rescue Mario from the evil Bowser!
This project was a lot of fun for me! I wanted to really push myself with the shapes and proportions of characters and try a different style. Usually my work tends to be on the cutesy and conservative side so this time I wanted to make something a bit edgy and tongue-and-cheek. It was fun re-imaging a series that I’ve grown up with and finally giving Peach the spotlight. (We won’t mention the DS game they made for her….)
Thanks for playing!
